What to do with kids in Napoli

Naples with children is lively and tiring at once: the alleys are narrow, the traffic is real and the hills are many. It works if you alternate the underground, the castles and the sea, and keep a pizza as a reward. Many stops take under an hour, and the seafront is the place to run.

Below are the places children actually enjoy, and further down every family-friendly place, sorted by where you are. For a ready-made day, the planner keeps a slower pace and puts the breaks in the right places.

Where to take the children

  1. Napoli Sotterranea

A descent beneath the city, among ancient cisterns and wartime shelters, with one stretch done by candlelight. For children it is an adventure; the narrow passages do not suit anyone uneasy in tight spaces.

  2. Castel dell'Ovo

A real castle on the sea, with the legend of Virgil's magic egg to tell, and the boats of the Borgo Marinari at its feet. The terraces are perfect for looking out over the bay.

  3. Via San Gregorio Armeno

The street of nativity scenes is an open-air toyshop: thousands of figures, from shepherds to footballers. It is tight with a pushchair, but children will not want to leave.

  4. Città della Scienza

The hands-on science museum in Bagnoli, with a planetarium and plenty of experiments to touch. It is out of the centre, so give it half a day, perhaps when it rains.

  5. Lungomare Caracciolo

The seafront walk, closed to traffic, is the place to let off steam, among bikes, rocks and gelato. Next door is the Villa Comunale, with shady avenues and room to play.

  6. Antica Pizza Fritta da Zia Esterina

Fried pizza is eaten standing up, everyone likes it, and it makes a quick lunch in the middle of the old centre. Watch out for the scalding filling: open it and let it cool a moment.

A slower pace, short walks between stops and a break to eat: the walk fits the little ones.

Frequently asked questions

Is Naples good for children?

Yes, with a little care. The alleys of the centre are narrow and full of scooters, so keep hold of small hands. Alternate the centre with the seafront or a park, and take a long lunch break.

How much walking is a day with children?

In the planner, choose the "Relaxed" pace and the "With children" interest: stops get shorter, breaks more frequent, and walks between them stay short. Every leg shows its minutes and metres.

What if it rains?

Napoli Sotterranea, the Città della Scienza and the Archaeological Museum are indoors. There are more ideas on the page about what to do in Naples when it rains.
