What to do today in Napoli
What to do in Naples today depends on how much time you have and where you start. Morning is the time for the markets and the old centre, between Spaccanapoli and Via dei Tribunali, where pizza awaits you at lunch. The afternoon heads down towards Piazza del Plebiscito and the sea, and sunset on the seafront is a fine end to any day.
Below are the classics not to miss and, further down, the places open right now, sorted by how far they are from you. If you are on a schedule, tell me when you leave: I will plan a walk that respects opening hours and gets you back in time.
The classics to see today
Cappella Sansevero
The Veiled Christ is what stays with you most from a visit to Naples. Places are limited and entry is timed: book as soon as you know when you will be nearby.
Via San Gregorio Armeno
The street of nativity scenes, in the heart of the old centre, a short walk from Via dei Tribunali and its pizzerias. It takes fifteen minutes, though people tend to stay longer.
Basilica di Santa Chiara
From the Gothic church you pass into the majolica cloister, one of the loveliest things in Naples and a shady place to pause mid-walk. The cloister has its own ticket.
Museo Archeologico Nazionale
If you have a couple of hours for one museum today, this is it: the treasures of Pompeii and Herculaneum, a quarter of an hour on foot from Spaccanapoli.
Piazza del Plebiscito
The great square in front of the Royal Palace, with the Teatro di San Carlo beside it and the Gran Caffè Gambrinus around the corner for a stop. The sea is five minutes from here.
Castel dell'Ovo
The castle on the water, with the Borgo Marinari at its feet. At sunset it is the right place to end the day, with Vesuvius in front of you and the seafront to walk.
Tell me when you leave: I will line up the stops that are open, with a time for each one and enough time to get back.
