What to do in Napoli when it rains
When it rains Naples has an advantage: part of the city is underground, and the rest is full of indoor masterpieces. The Museo Archeologico Nazionale can fill a day, the Veiled Christ in the Cappella Sansevero needs no sun, and cisterns and tunnels run under the alleys. The alleys do get slippery, though, so wear suitable shoes.
Below is an indoor route that fills a whole day, and further down every indoor place, sorted by how far it is from you. In the planner you can choose "Indoors only": the outdoor stops drop out and the walks between stops stay short.
An indoor route
Museo Archeologico Nazionale
A rainy day is perfect for the MANN: the mosaics and frescoes of Pompeii, the Farnese marbles and the Secret Cabinet. Allow at least two hours, or longer.
Cappella Sansevero
A few minutes into the old centre, Giuseppe Sanmartino's Veiled Christ and the anatomical machines in the crypt. A short, unforgettable visit: booking a time is wise.
Napoli Sotterranea
In the rain, the sensible thing is to go down: Greek and Roman cisterns and air-raid shelters tens of metres below the alleys. Visits are guided, at set times, and last about an hour and a half.
Pio Monte della Misericordia
On Via dei Tribunali, Caravaggio's Seven Works of Mercy over the altar it was painted for. Upstairs is a small picture gallery, and the Duomo is a two-minute walk away.
Duomo di Napoli
The cathedral with the Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro, all marble and silver. Beneath the nave you can go down to an early Christian basilica and remains of the ancient city.
Palazzo Reale
The Bourbon apartments on Piazza del Plebiscito, with the grand staircase and the court theatre. All indoors, and the Teatro di San Carlo is right next door.
In the form, choose "Indoors only": outdoor stops drop out and the walks between stops stay short.
