What to do with kids in Milano
Milan with children is easier than it looks: distances are short, the metro is convenient and the parks are in the centre. The trick is not to fill the day with art museums, and to alternate a castle or the Duomo roof with a lawn. The Science Museum is a day in itself.
Below are the places children actually enjoy, and further down every family-friendly place, sorted by where you are. For a ready-made day, the planner keeps a slower pace and puts the breaks in the right places.
Where to take the children
Museo della Scienza e della Tecnologia
Real trains, planes, a submarine and machines built from Leonardo's drawings: this is the museum children do not want to leave. Allow at least two hours, and check the day's workshops.
Terrazze del Duomo
Walking on a cathedral roof among the spires is an adventure for everyone. The lift saves the climb, but check the rules on pushchairs before you go.
Castello Sforzesco
A real castle, with towers, a moat and big open courtyards to run in, and Parco Sempione right behind it. The museums are optional: for little ones, the walls are enough.
Museo di Storia Naturale
Dinosaurs, minerals and great animal dioramas, inside the Giardini Montanelli: when children tire, they are already in the park, with room to play and ponds.
Parco Sempione
Milan's great lawn, with a pond and room to run, between the castle and the Arco della Pace. Ideal mid-afternoon, perhaps with a gelato.
Luini
A hot panzerotto, standing behind the Duomo, solves lunch with little fuss. Watch out for the scalding filling: let it cool a moment.
A slower pace, short walks between stops and a break to eat: the walk fits the little ones.

Frequently asked questions
Is Milan good for children?
Yes. The centre is small, the metro covers almost everything and there are parks a few minutes from the monuments. Alternate an indoor stop with an outdoor one, and take a long lunch break.
How much walking is a day with children?
In the planner, choose the "Relaxed" pace and the "With children" interest: stops get shorter, breaks more frequent, and walks between them stay short. Every leg shows its minutes and metres.
What if it rains?
The Science Museum and the Natural History Museum are indoors, and the Galleria keeps the rain off. There are more ideas on the page about what to do in Milan when it rains.
