What to do today in Roma
What to do in Rome today depends on how much time you have and where you start. Early morning is the time for the Colosseum and the Forum, before the heat and the tour groups; the middle of the day suits a museum or a church, and in the evening the squares of the centre, from Navona to Trevi, are at their best. The Vatican alone takes half a day.
Below are the classics not to miss and, further down, the places open right now, sorted by how far they are from you. If you are on a schedule, tell me when you leave: I will plan a walk that respects opening hours and gets you back in time.
The classics to see today
Colosseo
The symbol of Rome and the first entry of the day: book your time slot and arrive early. The same ticket covers the Roman Forum and the Palatine, best done straight after.
Pantheon
The Roman temple whose dome opens to the sky, in the heart of the old centre. From here you are five minutes from Piazza Navona and the Trevi Fountain.
Fontana di Trevi
The most famous fountain in the world is always crowded; early morning and late evening are the best times to get close. Remember the coin, thrown over your shoulder.
Piazza Navona
The Baroque square built on Domitian's stadium, with Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers. At sunset it fills with street artists and is the right place to pause.
Basilica di San Pietro
Entry is free but there is a security queue in the square, which moves faster early in the morning. With an extra hour you can climb the dome for the view over Rome.
Piazza di Spagna e Scalinata
The steps climbing to Trinità dei Monti, among the shopping streets. Sitting on the steps is not allowed, but the view down Via dei Condotti from the top is worth the climb.
Tell me when you leave: I will line up the stops that are open, with a time for each one and enough time to get back.

Frequently asked questions
What is open in Rome right now?
The list below shows the places open at this moment according to our hours. Where hours are not verified we say so: for museums and churches, check their own site before you go.
I only have a few hours: what should I see?
With two hours: the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and the Trevi Fountain, all on foot. With four, add Piazza di Spagna, or the Colosseum from outside and the Forum. The planner fits the walk to your times.
What is there to do tonight?
An aperitivo in Trastevere or Monti, a walk between Trevi and Piazza Navona lit up at night, or a performance at the Teatro dell'Opera, which moves to the Baths of Caracalla in summer.
