Museums in Roma

Rome's museums run from the popes' collections to contemporary art, and many are housed in palaces worth seeing in their own right. The Vatican Museums end in the Sistine Chapel; the Capitoline Museums, on the Capitol, are the oldest public museum in the world. The Galleria Borghese, with Bernini and Caravaggio, can only be visited by reservation. Palazzo Barberini and the Galleria Doria Pamphilj hold great painting collections, while Castel Sant'Angelo, built as Hadrian's mausoleum, ends on a terrace above the Tiber. For today's art there is the MAXXI, in Zaha Hadid's building in Flaminio. At the busiest museums it is worth booking ahead.

The centre is easy to cover on foot; the planner puts the stops in order around the time you have.

Your browser will ask to share your location

It's only used to work out how many minutes' walk you are from each place open right now.

  • We only use it to work out distances, and we don't keep it. If you share a walk, its starting point in the link is rounded to about 100 metres.
  • No account, no history, no notifications.
  • Rather not? Pick the city yourself: it works just as well.
