Archaeological sites in Palermo
In Palermo, archaeology mostly means two places: the Castello a Mare on the harbour and the Museo Archeologico Antonio Salinas. For now the Castello a Mare is the only place in this category on NowVisit: the remains of the fortress that guarded the port, now an archaeological park on the water next to La Cala. The Salinas, a former convent with cloisters near the Teatro Massimo, covers ancient Sicily and displays the carved metopes from the temples of Selinunte. The city has its own layers too: Palazzo Conte Federico is built on Punic and Arab walls, and the tour shows them up close. The island's big archaeological parks, such as Segesta and Selinunte, are outside the area we cover.
The Castello a Mare sits on the waterfront by La Cala; the planner can add it to a walk around the Vucciria.
